The Settle to Carlisle Railway

This is a stunning section of line to travel on and i’ve been excited to photograph it for some time. This is my first time and what an incredible journey it was. The history of this line is an interesting one and bounced back from the brink of closure due to problems with the Ribblehead Viaduct. It’s now a big draw for visitors and it’s easy to see why. We’re staring at Settle and going all the way to Carlisle. Not every stations on the line is shown below, really more the highlights.

Settle

As we leave Settle, the countryside starts to open up and it doesn’t stop until you get to Carlisle.

Ribblehead and Ribblehead Viaduct

The views from Ribblehead are stunning, but venture outside the station and the viaduct comes into view. With its 24 stone arches, it’s certainly the most impressive architectural marvel along the line.

Departing Ribblehead and over the viaduct, Blea Moor signal box can be seen on the right hand side of the line. Its seen better days unfortunately.

Heading on further down the line now, although there are plenty more stations, we didn’t stop at every single one and instead just soaked up the gorgeous scenery.

Carlisle

At the end of the line, the terminus of Carlisle. A modern yet busy station, serving as a major hub for trains in the north of England.
