Plym Valley Railway

In the final entry of 2023, we visit the Plym Valley Railway near Plymouth. Originally part of the South Devon and Tavistock Railway, the line closed in 1962 but work began in 1982 to restore a section of the line from Marsh Mills to Plym Bridge which has resulted in just over a mile of restored track. Although a small line, the railway are still acquiring rolling stock, this year seeing the successful purchase of a Class 101 DMU set. Todays train was made up of one of the DMU cars leading the rake but the actual motive power was provided by the Class 08 hooked up at the rear of the train. The 101 has a working generator which was sufficient to provide the heating for the train.

Enjoy the small selection of snaps from the day below. See you in 2024 for the next set of adventures!

We travel down the line from Marsh Mills to Plym Bridge. The track crosses a public pathway which requires the guard to jump off the train and manually open the gates.

After navigating the level crossing, the train pulls into Plym Bridge station. There is nothing further on from here at this point as shown below and the train heads back to Marsh Mills. The entire round trip takes no more than 25 minutes.
