East Lancashire Railway (Flying Scotsman 100th Celebration)

The LNER Class A3 60103 ‘Flying Scotsman’ is probably the most famous locomotive in the world. It’s certainly at least travelled the globe, from Australia to America and finally back in the UK now under ownership of the National Railway Museum in York. In its 100th year since entering service, special services are being put on at selected heritage railways in 2023 in order to celebrate this giant of railway history. Our setting for today….the East Lancashire Railway.

First train of the day is the one whose name is on everybodies lips…The Flying Scotsman from Bury to Rawtenstall

Back at Bury, we switch onto the DMU service which runs up to Heywood and back.

Bury Transport Museum

Back at Bury is time to check out the transport museum which is adjacent to the station. A further surprise to the day was finding yet another LNER Gresley loco hiding away here…. A Class A4, in the process of being overhauled…Enter the Union of South Africa.
