Leighton Buzzard Railway

Leighton Buzzard Railway is one of the last surviving light railways in Britain which has been in continued operation since 1919. Originally opened to transport sand, the line itself crosses countryside, housing estates and roads today. It is one of, if not the ONLY railway in Britain where staff are legally allowed to stop road traffic with flags. The 3 mile trip starts at Pages’ Park where the collection of narrow gauge stock trains are kept, up to the Stonehenge Works which has demonstrations of sand extraction and loading into tipper wagons.

Pulling into Stonehenge Works, there’s a variety of locos on display along with a sand extraction demonstration using a diesel crane.

It’s a nice smooth journey back to Pages’ Park, and you can see an example below where the staff stop the road traffic with flags.
