Museums and exhibits
Railways tell part of the tale of the railways but to fully appreciate their reach and diversity, the many static exhibits and museums help us to get a fuller picture and greater appreciation of the railways and of a time long since gone now.
Gone but not forgotten
As the country to give the railways to the world, Britain naturally has a vast railway heritage and past. Although many lines live on through the work of volunteers, there are of course lines which no longer exist. Some have been erased as though they never existed, but there are plenty which have taken on a new life as national walking and cycle paths. There are often plenty of markers which indicate the prior life of these lines which this section aims to explore.

Neither a museum or heritage railway, these places are active places in the world of industry. Not all of these pages are accessible and only those with permission of the site owner are available.

Mainline services are the backbone of the transportation network in Britain today. From the commuter lines into the cities to the small suburban and branch line services which serve rural communities, they are a crucial part of many peoples lives.
